E-scooters: What is allowed and what is prohibited?
Electric scooters are often bought or given as gifts. But many people don't know how to use them.

E-scooters, i.e. scooters with an electric drive, are becoming an increasingly popular gift. Scooters are also increasingly being used to get around in the Steinfurt district. No wonder: they are easy to use, space-saving and environmentally friendly. But there are also some rules for using them on the road.
What is allowed and what is forbidden? The police explain.

Allowed is.....

- ...to ride without a helmet. Helmets are not compulsory for e-scooters. Nevertheless, the police strongly recommend wearing a helmet. This is because - as with cycling - a fall at low speed can also result in serious injuries. A helmet protects!
- ...driving without a license. Riders must be at least 14 years old. A driving license is not required. However, beginners should practice riding an e-scooter in a place with little or no road traffic.
- ...on cycle paths, cycle lanes and cycle streets.

Prohibited is.....

- ...to take other people with you. E-scooters are designed for one person only.
- ...on footpaths or in pedestrian zones.
- ...ride against the one-way street.

...use your smartphone to make calls, check your social media account or write messages while driving.

The following rules also apply:

- Due to its design, an e-scooter may only travel at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
- The e-scooter must have a valid operating license. Liability insurance and an insurance license plate are mandatory.
- When it comes to alcohol, the same limits apply as for car drivers. It is not permitted to drive under the influence of drugs.

Stick to the rules and nothing will stand in the way of you enjoying your new e-scooter!
