There are more and more cycle paths in the Steinfurt district. However, there is still a lot of uncertainty and ignorance about which rules apply to these roads.
On the Ochtruper Damm in Metelen, a section of the Triangel cycle track is designated as a cycle road. Our colleagues from the district service carried out checks there together with the police traffic service on Friday morning (03.05.24) between 7.15 am and 8.30 am.
Many people do not follow the rules
The reason: there were repeated complaints from residents and users of the cycle lane about road users who were traveling too fast. In addition, only cars whose drivers are residents are allowed to drive in this area.
Brochures distributed
In total, the police (in cooperation with the public order office) stopped 16 vehicles - only two of which were using the road legitimately. Several warnings and misdemeanor reports were issued, and a driving ban was also imposed for speeding. The officers also distributed brochures on correct behavior on cycle lanes.
The police in the Steinfurt district will continue to monitor cycle lanes in future and provide information on the rules.
The most important
- In principle, motor vehicles are not allowed to drive on cycle lanes. This can only be restricted by additional signage.
- In addition, there are other rules that drivers must adhere to on cycle lanes - if they are allowed to drive on them: The maximum speed limit is 30 kilometers per hour. This is specified by the bicycle road traffic sign.
- And: cyclists always have priority over motorized road users in this area.
